Kerry Madsen – Looking to Defend the Doty!

(Bill W) July 11, 2013 – Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team have a big week in store. Tonight, the Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park awaits in Lima, Ohio. The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia native is the defending champion of the event. Friday and Saturday, it’s King’s Royal weekend at the Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio. The feature pays $50,000 to win. Kerry won at Eldora in the Spring with the World of Outlaws.

The WoO visited Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota last Wednesday night. After a lengthy delay to pack the track in, the team suffered some mechanical ills. “We had a driveline issue that probably affected our qualifying (17th),” says Kerry. “We weren’t able to make it out for the heat race, because we had a driveline to fix.”

After qualifying through the B main, Kerry would start in row nine for the feature. “The track was pretty heavy and narrow,” he says. “We moved up there. We started 17th and ran 12th, which doesn’t sound great, but it was actually a fairly good run with everything considered. I just wish we could have started further up. There wasn’t much better we could have done from there. It ended up being a good race, considering how late it was. It was a shame it was so late for the fans.”

It was on to Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas Friday and Saturday. “We didn’t qualify real great (17th) on Friday,” says Kerry. “The track lost a bit of time by the time we got out there. It was just a bit of bad luck.”

The car was spot on in the heat and the feature. “We had a great car in the heat (a run from 6th to 3rd),” says Kerry. “In the feature, we started 17th and advanced to around tenth. It started laying rubber about lap three or four and we passed a bunch of cars early. We couldn’t really pass any more cars after it started laying rubber. We all got in line.”

Kerry was one of the drivers who suffered a flat in the late going. “We got a flat tire around lap 25,” he says. “We got it changed and got back out and finished 13th. We would have had a good finish had we not lost the tire. That’s racing. They cut the race short. I think it was the right thing to do, but if they hadn’t, I think we’d be back up where we were before. They were shredding tires left and right.”

Kerry would qualify ninth on Saturday, but finished third in his heat. “Unfortunately, we had a bad start in the heat race,” he says. “We missed the Dash.”

He would rebound with a top ten finish in the main event. “To be honest, we didn’t have the best of cars on Saturday,” says Kerry. “I actually had a good restart late and we were able to get a top ten out of it. It wasn’t our best performance. The track was a little heavy and we were a little tight.”

The excitement is in the air for this week. “We have (co-owner) Pete Gavranich in this week, so I’m excited,” says Kerry. “We’d like to get some good results with him here. We’ve had some success at these tracks. Obviously, we won the Doty Classic last year, and we won at Eldora earlier this season. The reality is, if we have strong race cars and strong runs it will be ‘Mission Accomplished’ this week.”
