Kerry Madsen – Busy Swing Sets Up Nationals!

(Bill W) August 5, 2012 – A four-race tour of Canada, followed by stops in Bloomington, Indiana and Pevely, Missouri had the Keneric Racing #29 team busy the last two weekends. Now they prepare for their biggest event of the year, the 52nd Annual Knoxville Nationals. Driver Kerry Madsen will qualify on Wednesday night, hoping to lock into the biggest event in sprint car racing. They will get a last tune-up tonight at the “Capitani Classic” at Knoxville.

Friday, July 27 saw a stop at the Granby Autodrome in Granby, Quebec. After qualifying tenth and running fourth in the heat, the St. Mary’s, New South Wales driver was set for the main event starting 11th. “We were actually going to be o.k.,” he says. “Somehow, Kraig Kinser got messed up, and hit the infield tire going into one. He kind of bounced out in front of me and collected me. We spun out and had to go to the back. We ended up running twelfth.”

The next night at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec, Kerry timed in eighth, won the heat and ran sixth in the Dash, putting him outside row three to start the feature. “We qualified well (8th) and did well in the Dash (6th),” he says. “We battled Craig Dollansky for third a couple times in the feature. As I was getting him, he would get me back in traffic. With three laps to go, you are not going to believe this…we got two flat front tires. We ended up not finishing the last lap. I think we were still credited with ninth.”

At Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ontario, July 29, Kerry timed 3rd, ran second in the heat and third in the Dash. “We started third, and were running pretty well,” he says of the feature. “We were dropping back a bit, and got caught behind Kraig Kinser when he checked up. We went over the burm, and ended up 13th.”

Ohsweken Speedway in Ohsweken, Ontario hosted the World of Outlaws on Wednesday. “We missed the Dash and started 15th,” says Kerry. “We ran a really good race, but it was non-stop and we ended up ninth. We had a good racecar, we just needed a few yellows to get to the front.”

Back in the States on Friday, the WoO tackled the Bloomington Speedway bullring in Indiana.

“It was pretty bad rubber-down by the second heat,” says Kerry who finished tenth in the Dash. “We were running ninth, I think, in the feature and then Sammy Swindell had a flat tire. I got squeezed between Sammy and Steve (Kinser) and I got spun out. We finished 14th.”

The “Ironman 55” at the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri was the host last night. Kerry set everything up perfect before rain postponed the main event. “We won the Dash, which put us on the pole,” he says. “I’m sure we would have won. We only had 55 laps to go! That should have been in the bag. But the rain came. That was a bad deal, obviously.”

Things are set for tonight’s “Capitani Classic” at Knoxville. “We’re pretty excited,” says Kerry. “We’re going to run a new car tonight, and doing a little test and tune. We’re not getting too worked up about it. Our car, motor and the team has been working really well.”

As far as the Nationals go, crew chief, Rob Hart, and the rest of the team have everything done but the waiting. “Actually, all the preparation and hard work are over,” says Kerry. “So that gives you a sense of calm. Our car has been really good.”
