Colin Shipley claims pair of top-10 finishes at Merritt Speedway
Shipley Racing traveled north from Ohio to Merritt Speedway (Lake City, Michigan) on Saturday and Sunday for the track’s Fourth of July Weekend program.
On Saturday, driver Colin Shipley was one of 28 UMP Late Model drivers in the pit area at the 3/8-mile clay oval. He drove his Jim White Honda No. 44S car to the second quickest time in his group qualifying session, then won his heat race after starting in the second spot.
Shipley started on the front row for the 40 lap A-Main and was running second when he made contact with an infield tractor tire. After falling back to ninth with damage to the left front of the car, Shipley picked up five spots and turned in a fourth-place result. He trailed Dona Marcoulier, Greg Gokey and Travis Stemler under the checkered flag, while Austin Harnick finished fifth behind Shipley.
Sunday’s program drew 29 UMP Late Models and saw Shipley turn in quick time in his qualifying group. After starting on the pole in his heat, Shipley finished fourth, putting him 15th on the grid for the 40-lap feature. He snuck into the top 10 in the final rundown with a 10th-place finish.
