Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 12, 2019) – The 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores didn’t work out in Sammy Swindell’s favor.

Misfortune plagued Swindell and the Swindell SpeedLab No. 39 owned by Kevin and Jordan Swindell throughout the marquee event at Knoxville Raceway.

“We were hoping to come in and have a smooth weekend,” Sammy Swindell said. “We had some issues along the way that kept us from getting a better result. It’s sad that things crop up at that particular race for me and Kevin. We’ll learn from it and move on. The best thing is I had a great time. It was good to be able to go there as a family and race as a family. It was a successful weekend. We were there to try to win, but the odds were a little stacked against us. If everything went right I think we would have had a chance.”

An oil line came loose during hot laps last Wednesday before a mechanical problem hampered the team for the remainder of the preliminary night. Swindell returned to the track on Friday for Hard Knox Night, when nearly 80 drivers battled for the top four positions that lock into Saturday’s A Main.

Swindell qualified eighth quickest in his group and he placed second in a heat race to lock into the seventh starting position for the main event. He rallied into the top five and made a late-race pass for fourth place before misfortune struck again.

“I was passing for fourth, which would have been a lock-in spot,” he said. “The guy slid me and we went into the next scorner and the car was different. Then we started really struggling. Come to find out the right rear shock bolt had broke so the car was a handful after that.”

Swindell held on for an eighth-place result, which relegated him to the middle of the pack in the B Main on Saturday. He capped that race with a 13th-place result. It was his best Knoxville Nationals finish since 2016.

Swindell will return to a Bertrand Motorsports owned pavement winged midget this Wednesday at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Thompson, Conn., and Friday at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H., with the NorthEastern Midget Association.
