Sammy Swindell Runs to Runner-Up Result During Warm Up for 360 Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 29, 2019) – Sammy Swindell is in a great position heading into the 29th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank.

Swindell recently announced he is tackling the marquee event at Knoxville Raceway for car owners Terry Steward and Scott Brown. The trio decided to get a practice night in at the half-mile oval last Saturday and it was a stout showing while racing in a field of 50-plus competitors.

“I knew we’d have some good equipment,” he said. “It’s just having it set up right. It all worked out. We got it where I thought it was right and didn’t have to touch the setup all night. It was pretty smooth and pretty easy.”

Swindell qualified third quickest in his group before he maneuvered from sixth to third place in a heat race.

“I got a little tied up at first,” he said of the heat race. “There were some guys ahead of me that I didn’t know where they were going to go so I gave up a little time. If I would have been real aggressive I could have got some more. Once we had a good qualifying time we didn’t have to take as many chances.”

Swindell lined up fourth in the main event and rallied for a runner-up result, which was his best finish of the season.

“I ran the wrong place at the track early,” he said. “I got a good start so I thought I’d run somewhere they wouldn’t. I missed a corner a couple of times in turns three and four and let a guy or two get back by us. It’s a bit different being in the 360. It races a little different. You have to be on the throttle most all the time. I was more used to the 410 that I’d driven there earlier this year. It usually takes me a bit to get acclimated again because you have to be more aggressive with the throttle.

“If a couple things went a little different we could have had the win. When you finish and everything is fine we can build on that and fine-tune. It’s not like we’re scratching our head like, ‘What are we going to do to go faster?’ It’s going to make these next few days a lot easier.”

The focus now shifts to the 360 Knoxville Nationals, which Swindell won in 2016, making him only the second driver to win both the 360 and 410 Knoxville Nationals. He has five top-five finishes during the event, which ranks tied for sixth.

His preliminary night is scheduled for Thursday prior to Saturday’s finale.
