Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (Oct. 9, 2017) – Sammy Swindell dominated the Colorado ASCS Fall Nationals last Saturday at El Paso County Raceway, which made his long trip to Colorado and the long weekend worthwhile.

“We were there for the Friday night show and they got a shower around 4 p.m. or something like that,” he said. “That one was pretty brief, but we had another one around 5 p.m. and it rained really hard and hailed. That messed it up for the race track so they had to cancel the first night.”

Swindell and car owner A.G. Rains returned to the bullring on Saturday for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour weekend finale. Swindell was scheduled to start toward the back of a heat race, but a driver on the front row elected to go to the back so it moved Swindell into the second row.

“We were the quickest one in the practice,” he said. “We ended up second in the heat and that put us in the redraw. I was fortunate to draw the No. 1. That always makes your life easier.”

Swindell’s charge in a heat race locked him into the feature redraw, in which he scored the pole position for the 25-lap A Main.

“We were trying to keep up with the race track,” he said. “We were almost at 9,100 feet. We had a pretty good direction on our fuel. At that altitude the cars are down well over 100 horsepower. That was something we don’t deal with all the time so we had to make some adjustments. We kept making little changes throughout the night and it kept getting better.

“We took right off in the feature and drove away. Then I got held up by some guys in traffic. There were some cars running quite a bit slower. I got held up for about four laps and it let the second-place car catch up. We were able to get through the traffic and pull out a lead. Then we had a yellow with about eight laps to go. I was able to stretch it out after the restart. The traffic the last few laps went my way and we got through it easy. It made it a pretty simple weekend for us.”

The victory was Swindell’s sixth of the season and his third with the ASCS National Tour.

He is slated to compete this Thursday through Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the 30th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires with the ASCS Mid-South Region.

“Everything is going real well,” he said. “We’ve made little changes through the last few weeks and keep getting stronger. I feel we’ll be one of the cars to beat over there. You have to get those breaks and you can’t get in trouble. As long as we don’t have those obstacles, I feel we have a very good chance at repeating what we did last year.”

Swindell won both his qualifying night and the finale last season to record his fourth career Short Track Nationals title, which is tied for the most by any driver.
