Tuesdays with TMAC – Top Ten WoO Finish Sets Up Knoxville!
(Bill W) June 10, 2014 – Terry McCarl posted yet another top ten finish with the World of Outlaws at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska last Friday night. Unfortunately, a break in the steering led to a crash in hot laps Saturday at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. On the other hand, the Altoona, Iowa driver was not injured and will return to action to face the WoO this Saturday night at Knoxville. He will also be running in weekly action at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota Sunday night. Both Knoxville and Huset’s were rained out last weekend.
Despite coming out late at I-80 (23rd), TMAC timed in ninth quick. “I didn’t really feel good qualifying, but the motor is so good, it kind of pulled me through,” he says of his Rider power. “I kind of chose the wrong line there, but as it was, it turned out pretty good for us starting in the front of the heat race.”
He made the most of his starting position outside row one of the heat and went on to win. “Everyone is so tough out there,” says TMAC. “Danny (Lasoski) was on the pole, and (Donny) Schatz right behind us. You just can’t mess around with those guys. We got a good start, and Donny got a good run behind us. I threw a little bit of a blocker on him there in three, and we were able to hold him off. It was important to win that and get in the Dash.”
Starting seventh in the Dash, TMAC would come home six and earn a feature starting spot outside row three. “We were actually really good in the Dash,” he says. “We started on the bottom, and the preferred line was up top. We were able to get up to sixth there, and we were running the guys in front of us down at the end. We had a good car. I was really happy with it.”
The A.R.T. chassis was set up for the 30-lap feature as well. TMAC shot off into the top five and was running well when the only caution of the race flew with eight laps down. “We got a good start off the top,” he says. “We were able to get Sammy (Swindell) on the start, and then we slid back and forth with Kerry (Madsen) for fourth. We were hanging right there running a strong fifth and we had a yellow.”
The double-file restart did not works in TMAC’s favor. “We started on the bottom,” he says. “Daryn (Pittman) got a good run on us on the start. He went to the bottom in front of me, and I’m not sure what happened. He said he was having motor problems of some sort. I thought he must have broken something. I was just stuck there behind him. Everybody just railed us on the top. We lost four spots right there, and I was stuck down there on the bottom for a while.”
He would checker tenth. “It was unfortunate,” says TMAC. “We had a good car…definitely good enough to run fifth. Late in the race, I was able to run the guys down in front of us. We definitely didn’t have a winning car, but we had a good solid fifth place car. But I think that’s our sixth top ten with the Outlaws this year in limited starts, so we’re pretty proud of how we’re doing and we’re looking forward to Knoxville this weekend.”
With Knoxville raining out, the team headed to Lakeside on Saturday. Getting on the throttle in hot laps, the car did not turn. TMAC crashed hard in turn three. “We’ve had a chance to look it over, and it looks like we broke our steering,” he says. “After you drive straight into the concrete at one hundred and some miles per hour, it’s hard to decipher what exactly broke. All the bolts and steering arms were intact.”
Fortunately, he was o.k. “It was not a good feeling,” says TMAC. “Most of these crashes, you don’t have time to think about, but I was heading down the back straightaway and the car wouldn’t turn…so I had a couple of seconds to think about it. This was going to be bad, and that’s concrete, which is going to hurt. Physically, I’m o.k. I had a little neck pain on Sunday, but on a scale of one to ten, it was about a two. I have Butlerbuilt, Bell Helmets and Crow Safety Belts to thank for that.”
As for the car… “Surprisingly, the A.R.T. chassis is not that bad,” he says. “It’s bent and needs worked on for sure…it got the front end, rear-end, shocks…but for hitting the concrete, it’s not too bad. This car will race again at some point.”
With only Jeremy Scaddens’ #6 in the trailer, the team readied it for Saturday’s feature. “We pulled it down at Lakeside and did a start and park there,” says TMAC. “We didn’t want to risk crashing that car and having nothing for the next day or this weekend. Unfortunately, we don’t have a backup yet for this weekend, so we’ll be racing Jeremy Scadden’s car with the #24 wing this weekend at Knoxville.”

TMAC had a win on June 9, 2000. He drove the Jensen Construction #55 to an NCRA win at the Park Jefferson Speedway near Park Jefferson, South Dakota. Aaron Berryhill was second, ahead of Randy Nygaard, Micah Schliemann and Kenny Hansen.
