Tuesdays with TMAC – Avoiding the Slots!
(Bill W) March 6, 2011 – Terry McCarl shoots back into action in the TMAC Motorsports #24 this Thursday night in Las Vegas with the World of Outlaws. Last weekend, he copped a top five with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series at Canyon Speedway Park near Peoria, Arizona.
TMAC has run well in the past at the half-mile in Las Vegas. “I’m looking forward to it,” he says. “I’ve seemed to do well here in Vegas, even though I’m still looking for that first win. We’ve run pretty well. If we stay away from the slots and the tables, we’ll be fine!”
Saturday, it will be on to the Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, California. “It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to Perris too,” says TMAC. “Sander Engineering and a lot of our manufacturers on the West Coast are able to be there, so that will be a great thing too. We had a good run there (2nd) in 2004, and it’s another place I can’t wait to get back to. It’s a different, but fun track.”
TMAC ran Friday at Canyon with ASCS and finished second in his heat race after drawing the starting spot outside of row three. “We had a great run in the heat,” he says. “We had a great start. It helped that Jason Johnson didn’t start, but we were running well. We had a vibration, but the car was fast. I think Carson is going to like driving it when he gets a shot at it here in a month.”
The vibration caused a pit thrash before TMAC started eighth in the preliminary feature. “We had to tear the driveline out and change the U-joint,” he says. “We really didn’t have a chance to watch the racetrack and work on the setup. I ran the same two tires all night long and it may have helped me. I felt really loose from the word go. I couldn’t run up top, so I ran a slow and steady race on the bottom, keeping the car underneath me.”
He would finish fifth at the checkers. “We missed fourth by about a foot or so,” says TMAC. “Brad Loyet got going well on the top. He drove by Danny Wood and me. Then I was able to get back by Danny. I pulled beside him at the checkers and we were fifth. With no time to work on it, we were happy with the finish.”
Saturday’s finale saw a tough draw in the heat race. “I drew the second row inside behind a couple of fast drivers (Dustin Morgan and Roger Crockett),” says TMAC. “That can happen with the draw. I don’t like the inside, especially on a short track like that. Jason Johnson was incredibly fast. I knew Jason would be coming, but he had an advantage on top. I don’t think anyone could have touched him on Saturday. These guys turn a ton of gear with their 360’s. I know Jason was. It was a bit of an advantage for him. Live and learn.”
Starting outside of row one, TMAC cruised to a win in the B main, and then made preparations to start the finale 18th. “We felt solid in the B,” he says. “The car felt really good. We made a few changes and the track was slicking off. I really felt awesome even though we were starting 18th. I hooked the car up about as much as I thought I could. I was literally in the car to start the feature and they watered the track again. I took a look at it and thought it might blow off.”
TMAC worked his way forward in the stout field, passing seen cars and finishing 11th. “A lot of moisture slipped down to the bottom, and it ended up being the place to run,” he says. “I was just too tight. I had to drive my butt off just to get up to 11th.”

Scott Cromer asks: What finally got you on Facebook?
TMAC Answers: Actually, I’m starting to “Tweet” now. I like them both. I like the interaction with the fans. I try to answer them all if I can and I’m around. My boys stay Facebook is on the way out, so Twitter is where it’s at. It’s also a good way to keep my sponsors updated with what is going on, and I think it’s the future.
