Kenny Edkin Wins and Extends Point Lead at BAPS Motor Speedway

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: A week ago, Kenny Edkin’s car was down to a bare frame and an axle as it sat in the pit area at BAPS Motor Speedway.

It wasn’t a good night. Edkin crashed during his heat race and blew up coming through the field in the A-Main, which meant a long week at the shop.

But, Edkin and his crew didn’t let it slow down their season-long performance. The team thrashed during the week, got a car back together, and collected their ninth win of the season in the 25-lap BAPS Super Sportsman main event.

“Ben Woodring, Doug, Adam, Paul, Don, all of these guys who help me week in and week out, they are the reason this thing is fast,” Edkin said. “I’m just the lucky one who gets to drive it.

“All of the hard work we put in every week, it’s nice to be standing up here. Like I said, it’s my brother [John] and all of my guys. We were thrashing all week.”

Edkin didn’t get handicapped and had to start 13th on the grid. He got off to a good start and wasted little time surging into the top 10.

Up front, it was all Jay Fannasy. He started second on the grid and beat pole-sitter Chuck Landis through the first and second corner and was setting a blistering pace.

The first caution of the event came out on Lap 11, when Tom Wychoff spun. Four laps later, there was a second caution for Paul Miller, last week’s winner Frankie Herr, and Luke Deatrick, which closed up the field and gave Edkin a shot at the win.

“The cautions really helped us,” Edkin said. “I was getting around the bottom better than I have all year. I could get around the top, but the bottom was faster, unlike the last six to eight weeks, when the top has been the fast groove.

“Don made some awesome calls on the car. We didn’t want to snug up as much as we usually do, and this thing just rolled the bottom like gravy.”

Once Edkin got into second, he set his sights on the leader. He caught Fannasy on the 23rd circuit and made the winning pass on the next lap to take the win and gain more momentum heading into next week’s Gary Wolford Super Sportsman 100.

“I would love to get that one,” Edkin said after his 17th career win. “We are going to get this motor freshened up. I wasn’t sure it was going to last 25 tonight, so we will have a fresh bullet in next week. We will be here, and we will be ready.”

Russ Mitten and Chase Gutshall followed Edkin past Fannasy to finish second and third. Steve Fannasy completed the top five. Chuck Landis, Rich Eichelberger, and Gutshall were heat winners for the 24-car field.

Alan Sagi took the lead with five to go and sped away to victory in the 20-lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model feature event.

Ben Whitaker started on the outside pole and led the first 15 laps. Sagi, who started third, gave chase and was able to slip by for the lead on the 16th circuit. He paced the final four laps to add another win to his career resume’.

Whitaker settled for second, with Chase Billet storming to third after starting 14th. Troy Miller and Bobby Beard finished fourth and fifth. Wayne Pfeil and Shawn Miller were heat winners for the 20-car field.

The prestigious Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stock 40 was one of the highlights of the night, and Brian Walls was victorious in an event that featured nine cautions and a fuel stop.

Will Walls grabbed the early lead before giving way to Chad Smith on Lap 6. Smith led the next 14 circuits before Brian Walls took over and topped the field the rest of the way.

Smith finished second, followed by Kyle Martin. Ryan Smith and Jasen Geesaman completed the top five. Chad Smith set quick time for the 36-car field with a lap of 20.755. Brian Walls, Will Walls, Ryan Smith, and Geesaman were heat winners. Stan Wanner won the consolation.

In Superior Homes Extreme Stock action, Sam Rial started third and led the final 23 laps to add another win to his collection.

Travis Horan, Bill Powell, Andrew Hogue, and Donnie Broderick completed the top five. Powell was Rehbein’s Service Center Hard Charger, advancing from 10th to third.
