Dunn and Corcoran Lead Can-Am Golden Jubilee Season into the Month of May
The Nasty Track of the North season opener was exciting last week as the Golden Jubilee season saw a couple of surprise winners, but the night also belonged to drivers who had been there before.
The Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified division saw Billy Dunn start up front and lead every lap on his way to career win number 63 in the Modified ranks at Can-Am. The race got close in traffic as young Jackson Gill closed the gap but Dunn held on for the opening day win. Gill finished second with Lance Willix third, invaders Alex Payne and Zach Payne filled out the top 5. A total of 28 drivers took the opening night green flag.
The Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman welcomed the drivers in the DIRTCar Sportsman North Regional Series for a 30 lap contest and one of our own made it look easy. Four time and defending track champion Tyler Corcoran led all the way until a lap 29 red flag slowed the field and set up a green-white-checkered finish. Didn’t matter to Corcoran as he pulled away on the final restart to score the win, his 6th career series win. Gavin Eisele made some great moves at the end to finish second in a series race at Can-Am for a third time, with Cedric Gauvreau, Jessica Power and Shane Pecore finishing 5th. 36 cars signed in with 30 taking the green flag.
In other racing action, it was a surprise winner in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman 12 lap event. Logan Brown made the transition from the go kart ranks look easy as he held off Anthony Brownell and Genevieve Bartlett to score his first win in his first ever start. The Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints saw Tucker Donath pull away from two-time defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. to score the win. In the Sundance Leisure Thundercars, Lyle Robinson battle back from early race struggles to pass Jock Symonds on the final lap, for his first win of 2024.
This week the racing action will be just as exciting with all five divisions returning to the speedway and its Five Dollar Friday. General admission at the spectator gates is just $5.
So with the first race of 2024 in the record books, many have asked, has Dunn returned to championship form? What happened to Tim Fuller? Will Corcoran make it five titles in a row? How many different winners will we see this year?
