Golobic Wins Race and Championship on Same Night at Chico

Golobic Wins Race and Championship at Silver Dollar Speedway
CHICO, Calif., Oct 1, 2022 – It was a perfect Saturday night for team 17w and driver Shane Golobic at Silver Dollar Speedway. As a driver, Golobic added more accolades to his already brilliant career. First off, he led 39 of the 40-laps to win his second career Fall Nationals in tribute to Stephen Allard. With the win, he won for the third time this year at Chico, the most this season out of any other driver, and in doing so, he captured the 2022 track championship at Silver Dollar Speedway. It was a well-deserved, popular victory in front of a stellar crowd who were on hand to watch the final sprint car race of the year at Chico.
Michael Faccinto officially held the lead for the first lap. Yet, after that, it was all Golobic up front. Golobic stretched his lead to nearly three-seconds within the first ten laps. Behind Golobic, Faccinto was racing with Mitchell Faccinto. Those two waged a great war on the track, neither wanting the other to get the advantage. The first 14 laps went nonstop, and then all sorts of craziness broke out.
The race itself was filled with excitement on and off the track. Tempers flared on lap 14 when Tony Gomes dove to the inside of DJ Netto going into turn three. The two made contact and Netto was sent wildly flipping. Once the car came to a stop, Netto aggressively crawled out of the car and walked with a purpose towards Gomes, who had stopped on the opposite end of the track. Eventually Netto arrived at Gomes car, the two spoke for a bit, and then Netto reached down and pulled the wires that connect the engine to the spark plugs. Once Netto had removed those wires it would end Gomes night also. The altercation continued once Gomes car was brought back to the work area. A scuffle broke out, but it was soon ended, and cooler heads prevailed.
Just three laps later a multicar crash ended the night for Andy Forsberg, Casey Schmitz, and Willie Croft. The mess was spread across the track, so the officials decided to throw a red to allow the tow trucks and track officials the time and space needed to get the cleanup done. An open red was allowed for the teams to adjust their cars and add fuel.
So much action took place from lap 18 to 35 it’s hard to articulate in a story. Many drivers charged towards the front, only to be sidelined by accidents or mechanical failures. On lap 30 Michael Faccinto came to a stop after his race long battle to secure the second spot. Dylan Bloomfield’s night ended on lap 35 after he had worked his way into the top 10. Corey Day worked his way into second late in the race and began to reel in Golobic. Unfortunately for him, the turn one cushion took a bite out of him. His car pushed and then flipped upside down. Brad Bumgarner was scored in the seventh spot and on lap 36 but stopped in the infield ending his night with an unfortunate mechanical failure.
Golobic eased through the final lap of the race to get his 100th career win between midgets and sprint cars as a driver. Mitchell Faccinto was second. Kalib Henry held off Kaleb Montgomery for third. Montgomery was solid all weekend and continues to be a driver to keep an eye on with some big money races coming up. Another driver who impressed was Tanner Holmes. The Oregon driver worked his way from deep into a fifth-place spot. Chase Johnson charged from the last row to a sixth-place finish. Johnson passed more cars than anyone else during the 40-lap race.
A total of 66 cars entered the final night of the Fall Nationals. Andy Forsberg was the 63rd car out in qualifying but grabbed the fastest overall lap of the night. He turned a 12.196.
The A main event drivers who earned $400 to start, were given an extra $100 from the sales of the Stephen Allard tribute shirts. On behalf of the drivers and the track thank you to those involved who worked on short notice to make the shirts this year.
