Andrew Felker Avenges Early Trouble with Strong Sixth Place Run in Battle at the Center!

Story by Walker Racing Promotions (TeeJay Crawford Photography)
Du Quoin, IL | December 22, 2014 - For Andrew Felker and his Sixty-Six Truck & Foreign Salvage team, this weekend showed the perfect example of never giving up when your backs are against the walls. After being tangled up in two cautions during the 40-lap Battle at the Center main event, the Carl Junction, Missouri native rallied behind the wheel of his BOSS Chassis No. 11A and stormed to the front as he claimed hard charger honors with his sixth place finish.

The night started off strong as the 22-year old timed in fourth quickest in hotlaps at a 9.940, showing his speed early. Heat race action would see Felker move from fourth to finish third as he earned a spot in the first qualifier. With only the top seven finishers transferring into the main event, it was make or break time for the 2012 POWRi Midget champion.

After struggling to gain progress in the opening laps of the qualifier, Felker found his line around the outside of the "Mini Magic Mile" and moved into the sixth position from eighth. While fighting an incredibly tight race car, he would hang on to finish in sixth and gain a feature start in the 21-car main event.

As the green flag dropped on the 40-lap feature, Felker slowly started moving forward in his No. 11A machine. Soon enough he was on the verge of threatening for a top ten spot as his BOSS/Fontana started to come to his liking. On lap 20, however, a mistake entering turn three would leave Felker spun around and being forced to the tail of the field.

With only 20 laps left in the fifth annual indoor race, Felker quickly began his march to the front for the second time on the night. Just as things turned around for the Carl Junction resident, lady luck came back striking in a bad way. On lap 35 with Felker near the back end of the top ten, a spinning car in front of him would leave him nowhere to go and an innocent victim in a late race caution.
The resilience of the AFR team remained as Felker was able to again power back to the front of the field and cross the finish line in sixth. The impressive showing also earned Felker and his team hard chargers honors as they advanced ten spots from 16th to sixth.

"We over adjusted from the heat to the qualifier and was just too tight in the qualifier, fell back early in it and had to really hustle the car to get in the show," said Felker. "In the A we had a really good car and we picked off a few cars before getting in line as the track widened out. I started trying to move around too much and just over drove corner entry and spun out. Once we were in the back we were in a bad position, but managed to rally back in the end. I felt like we had an even better car than what the results show and looking forward to taking notes from this weekend into the Chili Bowl."

All in all, it was another great Battle at the Center performance turned in by Felker and his team, who also ran second at this event in 2012. Up next for the 22-year old will be his return to micro sprints at the 30th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout from December 31st-January 3rd. Felker will then try and earn his second career Chili Bowl Midget Nationals start from January 13th-17th as he runs the prestigious Tulsa, Oklahoma event.
