Felker Ends Second Despite Mechanical Failure at Twister Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 16, 2013) – Oh what could have been for Andrew Felker at last weekend’s inaugural Twister Nationals.

Felker was undone by a mechanical issue early in his feature on Friday night of the doubleheader at I-44 Riverside Speedway, which sidelined him from competition on Saturday.

“I definitely felt like we had a dominant car,” he said. “Even with our problem we managed to finish second.”

Felker held on to place second in the feature on Friday, which capped a night he started with a heat race victory.

“I ended up starting front row outside,” he said. “I got the lead on the start and I think we ended up winning the heat race by a half a lap. The track was pretty quick. The key to that place is entering high in turn one, getting the car rotated and as straight as possible down the backstretch.”

Felker earned the most points during heat action to garner the pole for the 25-lap feature, which was shortened to 20 laps.

“Actually we spun the tires in the slime in the bottom of turns three and four (on the start),” he said. “Then we went into turn one and Danny Smith, who started on the outside front row, bobbled. I fell back to third.”

Felker battled with the top-two cars for most of the first half of the race, but was undone several times by untimely cautions.

“We’d jump from third up to the lead every couple of laps and then we’d have a yellow,” he said. “I think that happened two or three times. I think we got the lead on Lap 10 or so.”

However, at some point during that competition for the top spot, the throttle shaft on the butterflies where it goes into the injection broke. While Felker mashed the throttle pedal to the floor, he only received half throttle.

“I was half throttle and I just hopped up top,” he said. “Even on the restarts when I’d get on the gas they’d pull me five or six car lengths. We just stayed in the gas the whole time.”

With only a couple of laps remaining, Felker surrendered the lead to eventual winner Chris Andrews, who was piloting a Felker-owned midget for the first time ever. Felker maintained the runner-up finish to give Felker cars a 1-2 finish.

“It was kinda surprising we finished Friday night,” he said. “It’s just something not many people carry spares of. I had to be a crew guy on the second car (on Saturday).”

Felker is scheduled to head to a test session on Sunday at Port City Raceway in Tulsa, Okla., to see if the track is a viable option to host a midget event next season.

His next race is set for Nov. 14-16 at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz., with the Honda USAC National Dirt Midget Series.
